Hi There.

I am 17 years old,
But still have very pink bedroom, still not sure how we managed to get the carpet to match the walls and the wardrobes...
I'm an insomniac but i'm pretty sure I have the best dreams ever!
I'm addicted to my television, even if nothings on.
On the rare occasion I get bored of watching tv, i'll usually be on the computer or on 'Just Dance'. Pretty sure I can call myself an expert at it ;).
I love music and singing along to all my songs, its a shame I cant sing.
I've recently become addicted to painting my nails, but that's not weird at all...

Life Update

I wrote so many posts about university and all the open days. I was so sure going to university was what I wanted, but I don't think it is any more.

I wasn't always completely sure whether I did want to go but everyone else wanted to and I was sure I would when the time came. So I just went along with everything because I really didn't think I was ready to leave school in just over a years time and start work.

I think I first started to doubt myself when I went to a UCL Open Day/Interview and everyone there seemed so excited to go there and they really wanted to do something to do with Biology in the future. But i've never really had a clue as to what I wanted to be or do and a career in Biology never really appealed to me, but I thought a degree would at least point me in the right direction. I was just completely unenthusiastic compared to these people and I think I was making going to university seem like something I had to do, rather than something I wanted to do and I really wasn't look forward to all the work.

All science courses have a lot of lab time and class time, I think most places have said 35 hours, whereas other courses can be a lot less as there is much more private study time. And I realised I don't even really enjoy lab work that much, I prefer the learning part over the practical part, so spending so much time in a lab is something I really couldn't do. And when I went to Open Days everyone seemed so much more excited about using the labs and doing research projects than I was.

Then in a Biology lesson I realised I wasn't even enjoying the lessons as much any more. I think i've become a lot more lazy and now I don't really look forward to any lessons, when before I used to love having Biology and it would be my favourite lesson, and I wouldn't even mind doing the homework or revising for tests because I actually enjoyed learning it!

So now I've written to all my university's asking for deferred entry. I've got three replies, from Kent, Nottingham and UCL, and they're all fine with that. Even though my Kent information on UCAS hasn't updated which is really awkward... And that was going to be my Insurance. So now I am free from university for a year and I feel so much better about it. Before when thinking about leaving school I was worried because I would think about uni and I wouldn't feel good about it but now I think about leaving school and I feel good because I'm totally ready for a break and to get a small job and hopefully figure out what I want to do.

I'm going to apply for some Apprenticeships over the year. I really want to get one at the BBC, I think it would be so exciting to work there, behind the scenes on all the sets. I've always loved this area of work and I think I would love to pursue a career there much more than I would in the area of Biology. It just seems so exciting! I can't apply for that apprenticeship until February 2013 though so I have to wait nearly a year... But hopefully in the few months lead up to that I can get some work experience.

I feel really crazy for changing my mind so drastically all of sudden, but i'm sure i'm not ready for uni just yet, maybe I will be in a year but I'm hoping for this apprenticeship. I'm really worried i'll change my mind again but at the moment when people talk about going to uni I don't feel like I want to go, and I kind of feel glad i'm not going.

Sorry, this post is kind of random. It just seemed like a big thing that maybe I should write about.

In Time

I went to see In Time today. It was really good. It's set in the future but kind of matches the problems we have today in our society, but that's not just what it's about.
In the future time is currency, you run out of time, you die. Everyone stops aging at 25 but you need to earn time to stay alive. The green thing on Justin Timberlake's arm is the countdown. I have no idea how realistic a green timer that counts down on your arm is, but it's pretty handy.
Also, Alex Pettyfer is in the film, he's a bad guy though but I'm pretty sure he was the best character...
You should definitely go see it, it's much better than the adverts (well I thought so anyway).

My mum bought me an amazing lip balm, it is so delicious. And it's got a metal roll on thing, which is pretty fun. And 50p from every purchase goes to the charity 'Children on the Edge' to help vulnerable children all over the world.

I was looking on this website, notonthehighstreet.com because one of my friends was using it and I saw some amazing bags. I asked my mum if I could get one, and I had the best reason - for university. She said yes, so hopefully i'll get one soon, I just need to choose one. I've narrowed it down to two but I can't choose.

I really love the dog one, it's so cute. But everyone loves owls. I suppose that's why I want the dog bag... Any suggestions? ;)

I'm going to do some more online shopping, peace out!

Kent

Yes, another open day!

I thought after going to four university open days they would start getting a little boring and basically be the same, but Kent was absolutely amazing! The accommodation was the best so far, it was so clean, so modern and there wasn't a bad thing about it. Even the shared bathroom was lovely! I think it was because they built into a little house/cottage so it was more homely and cosy, rather than there just being a large hall with a few rooms. However, the flats were lovely too! And the kitchen was three times bigger than the one at the houses. It may have been because those rooms were more expensive, as they were en suite.

The labs were nice too, they were open and large. But most of them have been to be honest. I didn't really like UEA though, they were more claustrophobic, still big though.

The grounds were amazing too. nothing like a university, more like a village. There was a giant hill (which meant it was always windy :/) that lead to Canterbury and you could see the Cathedral from there. It was lovely. I think its a 10 minute walk down the hill into Canterbury, so that means a 30 minute walk back up. Might have to get the bus, they wouldn't stop saying how it comes every 8-10 mins, I was a little suspicious.

Pretty sure it looked better in real life...
The Biology course here also has a year in industry.  That's the main reason why I wanted to go to Bath but I can go to Kent now! With Kent you have to arrange the work experience yourself, setting up interviews etc., but at Bath they sort it for you. I suppose the experience of applying to get a job is good, but I'd be so worried about not getting a placement :/.

Kent is a campus university so there's shops on site, but there's also a cinema, theatre, nightclub and a job shop. Loads of comedians went there and are going to go there to perform, like Omid Djalili and Dom Joly, who I love! The cinema is apparently cheap for the students too, which is great, but the films come out there about a month after their release so that could be annoying... The Job Shop sounds awesome. They help the students get jobs and have a list of employers who are good and bad to make sure we get a good job. That could come in handy :).

I have to say Kent is now my first choice. It was the first university I seriously considered and definitely the best I've seen so far.

Heartbeat

Yesterday I completely forgot to mention something amazing that I saw at UEA. There was a little demonstration about birds, I think it was about how the heart is so important and how it develops in the embryo, and there were open eggs under the microscopes. There weren't any properly developed birds, just a web of blood vessels and you could see the heart beating! It was absolutely amazing! It was so small but you could see it with out the microscope too. It was like a little miracle for me, I just thought it was to most amazing thing i'd ever seen :).

UEA

Definitely the coolest named university i've been to so far. I wasn't sure about UEA though, it was at the bottom of my list but going today I realised how much better it actually is!

We went to a Biology talk first, and they kept calling the subject Bio, which I thought was cool because I do that, and then after talking about the course they started to talk about the research they've been doing in the university. It was really interesting. First, they talked about a new drug that could be used to cure a type of skin cancer. They did this by incubating loads of Tadpoles, and in separate samples, place each tadpole into a different chemical solution. They found that one type of chemical, leflunomide, which is in a drug for Rheumatoid Arthritis, could help cure melanoma skin cancer. Trials are being carried out now. There was also more research into a chemical called dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). It's produced by sea creatures, like phytoplankton and other single celled organisms. I think it was a by-product of some reaction. Anyway, someone wanted to know what happened to it and how the sulphur in the DMSP was released back into the environment. They discovered that a certain gene in a bacterium broke down the DMSP into dimethyl sulfide (DMS). This means the sulphur is released which causes the 'seaside smell'. I thought this was pretty cool, I didn't ever think about what made the seaside smell like the seaside, I suppose I just assumed that was what a lot of salty water smelt like. DMS also helps animals find food, as it attracts them towards the creatures that produce it, it also makes clouds which means more sunlight is reflected thus cooling the Earth. DMS is also found in small quantities in Sweetcorn and in larger quantities in Cabbage, which is why cabbage doesn't smell too nice... And another research project was into getting electricity from bacteria! There are some bacteria that undergo anaerobic reactions and they need to get rid of the negative charge from this reaction so they have little 'wires' coming out from their body made from metal complexes. They then release the charge into the rock. Scientists are trying to find a way to harness this energy.

I wish I had some more diagrams or pictures to explain this, because reading is just boring and with pictures you could see what I meant :P. They had some good ones on the presentation but I can't find any on the website...

After the talk we went to the labs. There were nice and really big. They had just been refurbished so they had big screens above each work station. I had a go with a pipette. It was so cool, and the measurements were tiny. I had to put some dye in this little gap on a machine to separate DNA. Even though not all the dye went in the right place, i'd say I did pretty well for my first go ;).

It's so big for such tiny measurements!

Then I ate lunch. We sat in 'The Square' and we watched a band setting up. It was pretty cool, one member had a green mohican and played the trumpet, and someone else played the Saxophone - he was really good! They still hadn't finished by the time we'd finished but we walked past later and they sounded good.

The Square. It looks so nice when it's so sunny.

We wanted to see accommodation next and so we walked over to the buildings but everyone who was entering was in a tour group so we just joined onto a group as they entered. The guy looked at us weirdly though, I don't think he remembered us being there at the start but he didn't say anything... The accommodation was okay, it seemed a little cramped with not a lot of space to put your stuff, but that could have been because the wardrobes were built into the walls, rather than being free standing and looking very big. I liked the shared rooms, I didn't think i'd want to share but they were very spacious and had sort of separated sleeping places for each person so it wouldn't have been too bad. Plus it was much cheaper! The outside of the buildings weren't very attractive, they were just concrete and old looking but some were so close to the Biology labs I would only need ten minutes to wake up and get ready and make it to the labs!

We also went the library. We got lost. Who names floors 2, 1, 0, 01 and 02. We kept going back to the map and the shelves and couldn't find the Biology books! I think I preferred Bath library though, it was so big and friendly.

I still have two more Universities to visit: Kent and Queen Mary's. It's going to be so hard to choose which will be my first choice!

P.s. Last night I had a horrible dream. It was results day and I did so badly! I got an E in ICT which, to be honest, I wasn't that worried about, but I swear I revised for it. Then I got a D in Biology and I was so scared and worried and upset. I need an A :/. And I got a C in Psychology and Maths, which I need B's in. I was so upset, and everyone around me had done so well. I think I spent the rest of my dream crying, until I had to stop the alien invasion... I forgot the dream when I woke up but a few minutes later I suddenly remembered, and I had a wave of all the emotions I had in my dream, as well as relief that my dream hadn't actually happened in real life! Oh, I really don't want results day to come, but I kind of do because I don't want to keep worrying about what I got. I don't recommend dreaming about results!

P.p.s. My last post showed the London Eye with a missing capsule. I think that's capsule No. 13. That explains why it's missing...

Nottingham

I was surprised that I loved Nottingham so much! It was really good. The biology course sounds amazing and they let you do modules from other courses, like languages, so I might be able to do the biological side of psychology which i'm really interested in. The course for Bath wasn't very detailed, but I did manage to find an outline today and it is pretty similar to everywhere else so I don't think i'd mind going there, but i'd love the chance to do some psychology. But I would like to do that professional placement on the Bath course, I'd love to get that experience. Oh, it's going to be so hard to choose a university to go to. Hopefully i'll know in a couple weeks when i've been to all the open days :/.

I did prefer the accommodation in Bath, it was much more open and modern. The shared en suite at Nottingham looked really cramped and the shared study had pretty small rooms but the single study was really nice, and in Florence Boot Residence Halls were the best rooms, the windows were awesome and had little balconies. And every room has a fridge! I will totally be storing coke and chocolate milk in those ;). The whole campus is catered, so we get 19 meals a week, which is great because I cannot cook, and the menu was so varied it was amazing. The Dining Halls were so large, like Hogwarts! Okay, so maybe not that large but they were definitely bigger and more sophisticated than my school canteen.

There was a lake, like Bath, with ducks, like Bath. But luckily they didn't try to steal my food, which was really good ;). Instead they just left poop everywhere! We saw an empty bench and thought, 'perfect, now we can eat', but there was so much poop we left and sat on a field :P. Then my coat got covered in grass -.- I just can't win!

The whole university was huge though! It would take me ages to get places because the halls of residence are on the outskirts of the university and the biology labs are right in the middle. That kind of put me off, it was so easy to get lost, and I love the layout of Bath, so simple and the Parade that connects everything is perfect. There was so much space in Nottingham, and I thought there was so much space in Bath! It was like a National Park or something, absolutely huge! And the Portland Building was really nice, it had a bank and bookshop and Boots, there was also a Student Union shop that sold all of the essentials, and beer ;). Also, Bath had an incredibly amazing library but the libraries in Nottingham were pretty small and joint to the halls of residence.

 Nottingham                                                    Bath
Pretty sure this shows that Nottingham is so much bigger :P

The Student Union at Nottingham has so many societies, even Cheer leading and Pole Dancing! Bath had some too but I didn't go to a talk about Student Life so I didn't hear as much about it. Nottingham has a 'First Week' thing where all the new students are taken to nightclubs and forced to befriend people, sounds rather scary to me but apparently it's great. They also have a Summer Party where good bands and people play.

Travelling to Nottingham was so much easier. We left the house at 7am and arrived there about 10am. There wasn't any traffic or anything, it was amazing! At one point we thought we'd finally joined the open day traffic but there'd just been some police cars on the road. People were definitely rubbernecking. I totally slept on the way there and back though ^.^ I was so tired. I was wearing contacts so when I woke up I was so surprised I could see!

Bath and Nottingham are both good but for different reasons, I hope a university I visit later will have everything I want :) otherwise I don't know how I will decide. I've still got UEA, Kent and Queen Mary in London to visit. Can't wait ;).

Bath

On Thursday I went to the Bath University Open Day, and it was definitely better than going to school! I still had to wake up quite early though :/. We left around 8am and didn't get there until around 12, the journey was so long! Most of it was on the train to Bath so I just ate my sweets and listened to Taylor Swift and Glee. As we arrived we saw the city and it was so lovely! The buildings were all made out of the same colour bricks and they just looked so clean and wonderful. We got lost so got to explore more of the town than we needed to and it was just so beautiful. They had the same shops as anywhere else but they looked fabulous. The bus journey was good, it took the scenic route and 2 miles ended up taking 40 minutes, but that could have been due to open day traffic... Seeing more of the town was good though :).

When we got to the university you couldn't see much, just the logo on a wall and some accommodation in the distance but once we went further and reached the parade it suddenly became gigantic! We went to the science building first because we were almost late for the talk, turns out they were the furthest buildings, but we made it and the talk was good, I did find out a little more about what the course involves. I'm not sure if I liked the sound of the course very much, but there's a professional placement in the second year which I'd love to do. Then we went to the labs, which were massive. There were benches lining the room, and they looked so clean and modern. I think they were the size of 2-3 classrooms in my school. And the microscopes were too awesome, they had two eye pieces, like binoculars, and they made the specimen, which was a buttercup, look almost 3D. They also had giant stick insects which were terrifying! I had to get away before they made me hold it. There were some sheets and leaflets on each bench and my dad starting grabbing them all and handing them to me, even the ones for courses I don't want to do, I think I picked up 3 each of leaflet they had!

This is the Parade, I don't think I could imagine it
this empty after Thursday.
There was a lake and so much grass space so we had lunch there. There ducks wandering around and my dad fed one some bread and then it started climbing over me and my mum trying to get our sammiches! We weren't even the ones to feed it! I was so worried it would bite me... There was some people filming, i'm guessing for next years undergraduate students, and they totally caught all the action with me being attacked by the ducks. Suddenly there was a sausage roll involved with a seagull a bit further from us so the duck left and we took our chance to run away then! We didn't even finish our food :( I was so hungry!

I went to the Library too and it was massive and amazing. The bookshelves reached the ceiling and there were little stalls to stand on to reach the top. There were also loads of study areas and so many computers. I thought Level 4 had loads, but it turned out each level had the same amount!

I love the glass walls, so fabulous!

The accommodation was nice too. I actually preferred the rooms where you share the bathroom with the hall than the rooms where you have an en suite bathroom. I think it reminded me too much of Travelodges. I can't decide if I preferred the rooms being down a hall or on separate levels (it's hard to explain the layout). But the one where you're on separate levels is where they had 4 showers and toilets which I thought was pretty good, as the one where you're on a hall only has one shared bathroom I think. I think the best rooms were the biggest ones with the double beds and en suite, but they were also the most expensive... I think i'll chose Eastwood accommodation, it seemed the friendliest, brightest. Oh and did I mention the desks were so big! They were amazing! I think I could see my self using that ;).

The journey home was pretty disastrous though. The bus took ages because of traffic, so we walked after an hour stuck on there. And then the train due before ours was cancelled so they got on our train and we didn't get seats straight away but some people got off so luckily we did because it was a long journey. There was a fatality on the tracks at some point which delayed and cancelled some trains so they said we were allowed to  get another train from Reading to Waterloo but i'm pretty sure that took longer! I think we were on that train for a couple of hours or more. Eventually we did get home, at 9pm and I had half a chicken burger at 10pm for dinner, it was pretty good. I had an ICT essay to do so had to get into school early the next day to do that, but mine was about half as long as everyone else's! I hope it was all right. Then I had to do Biology work! It was hectic, but luckily my Psychology lesson was brought forward and I got to leave school early, then I slept for a couple hours ;) it was awesome. Except my mum kept calling me like every half hour, and she was so loud, I woke up with my heart beating really fast and feeling scared! But I found out that I have next Thursday off, that means I've missed two of my full school days ;). Whoop!

Tomorrow I'm going to Nottingham University, this will give me a chance to compare it to Bath, because I've never been to a university so I have no idea if it looked good or not! I think it did... I have to get up at 6am though because we're driving and it could take 3 hours to get there so my dad wanted as early start, at least i'll be able to sleep on the journey though :). And i'm bringing at least 3 cans of Coke ;).

Sorry if this post is boring, but at least I can use it for a reference when I'm deciding which universities to apply to. Oh, I don't know how i'll chose...

P.s. Just in case you were wondering, I didn't see/find/kidnap Charlie. Maybe next time :/
